Air India plane crashed.
New Delhi, June 12 — In one of the deadliest aviation disasters in India’s recent history, an Air India aircraft has crashed, claiming the lives of at least 240 people, including several on the ground, according to senior aviation authorities.
The flight, reportedly en route from Mumbai to Kolkata, lost contact with air traffic control minutes before its scheduled landing. Witnesses near the crash site described a deafening explosion followed by flames engulfing the surrounding area.
“Preliminary reports confirm 240 fatalities, which includes passengers, crew, and civilians impacted on the ground,” said R.K. Sharma, a senior official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Rescue efforts have been ongoing since the incident, with local authorities, firefighters, and NDRF teams involved in round-the-clock operations.
The black box has been recovered and will be analyzed to determine the cause of the crash. Early speculation suggests a combination of mechanical failure and weather turbulence may have contributed.
The Prime Minister has expressed deep sorrow and pledged full support to victims’ families. Compensation packages are being discussed, and grief counseling has been arranged at multiple locations.
This marks a tragic day in Indian aviation history, with investigations underway and national mourning declared.
